ARMENIA AND UNITED NATIONS

Pursuant to the formal request lodged by the Republic of Armenia, the UN Security Council in its 29 January 1992 Session 3035 adopted the Resolution 735 recommending the General Assembly to accept Armenia’s UN membership request on January 23, 1992. On March 2, 1992, during its 46th Session the General Assembly adopted the Resolution 46/227 admitting the Republic of Armenia as a UN member.

On 17 September 1992 an agreement was signed in New York between the United Nations and the Government of the Republic of Armenia. The agreement was related to the establishment of a United Nations Interim Office in Armenia "with a view to supporting and supplementing the national efforts in solving the most important problems of economic development and promoting social progress and a better standard of life. The Government of the Republic of Armenia agreed to ensure the availability of the necessary facilities to enable the Interim Office to perform its functions fully and effectively."

In December 1992 the United Nations established its office in Armenia. Since October 1995 the UN Office moved to the centre of Yerevan at 14 Petros Adamyan street.  In 1998 the UN Armenia Office was designated by the UN Secretary-General as a UN House.

Currently the UN Armenia Office houses the following UN Agencies, Departments, Funds and Programmes: Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Labour Organization (ILO), World Food Programme (WFP), World Health Organization (WHO), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Department of Public Information (UNDPI), UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
