UN Channels Armenia’s Assistance to the Displaced Population in Iraq

During a September 2 ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bradley Busetto, UN Resident Coordinator and Christoph Bierwirth, UNHCR Representative accepted a note from the Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandyan on transferring USD 100,000 in support of the population affected and displaced by the ongoing conflict in Iraq. Representatives of the Yazidi community in Armenia Aziz Tamoyan, President of the National Union of Yazidis and Shaikh Bro Hasanyan, religious leader of the Yazidis of Armenia also attended the ceremony.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Bradley Busetto welcomed the decision made by the Government of Armenia and the solidarity expressed with the affected Iraqi minorities. “This pledge marks an important milestone for Armenia as a donor country supporting UN’s humanitarian response and demonstrates its important role as a member of the international humanitarian community”, said the UN Resident Coordinator. Mr. Busetto assured that the UN and its partners are working in Iraq to respond to the most pressing humanitarian needs of the displaced population, which is estimated over 1.8 million according to the latest UN reports.  

The Foreign Minister of Armenia Eduard Nalbandian stated that the people and the Government of Armenia share the indignation and concern of Yazidi citizens of Armenia about the current tragic developments in Iraq. Being home to about 40,000 Yazidis, Armenia has reacted by voicing the urgency of the problem in international organizations and calling on the international community to take action.

Christoph Bierwirth, the Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees commended Armenia’s decision to support the displaced population and helping to mitigate the tremendous suffering caused by the conflict in northern Iraq. “To date, the region is hosting more than 600,000 internally displaced persons, including above 200,000 people who have fled the Sinjar areas since early August 2014”, said Mr. Bierwirth.

The President of the National Union of Yazidis Aziz Tamoyan expressed gratitude to the Government and the people of Armenia for sharing the concerns of Yazidis, voicing the issue in the international arena and standing by the Yazidi people in this difficult situation.

The government contribution will be transferred to the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva and will be channeled to the UNHCR operation in Iraq in support of the displaced population.
