Thea Fierens: Census Data is Very Important for the Country

Ms. Theodora Fierens, UNFPA Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia paid a short visit to Armenia on May 15-19, 2011.

During her visit, Ms. Fierens took part in an international conference devoted to the housing problems of refugees, as well as met with representatives of the main partners of UNFPA in the country, including with Armen Gevorgyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Arthur Grigoryan, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Sergey Khachatryan, Deputy Minister of Health, and Arman Kirakosyan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In the meeting with Deputy Prime Minister who is also the head of the governmental commission in charge of preparation and implementation of 2011 Census, UNFPA Regional Director spoke of the particular importance of conducting the Census as the Census data would allow devising the right policies for the development of the country. Ms. Fierens also mentioned that UNFPA would continue providing the fullest possible support to implementation of the 2011 Census including by helping to involve other countries and international organizations. 

In the course of her stay, Ms. Fierens also visited one of the travelling gynaecologist project sites at Avshar community of Ararat region, as well as the Institute of Perinatology, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology.

UNFPA Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Office coordinates activities of UNFPA country offices in 20 countries: Albania, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo (UNSC 1244), Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
