Workshop on “Strengthening Phytosanitary Capacity” was organized by State Service for Food Safety of the Ministry of Agriculture of the RA and UN FAO

State Service for Food Safety of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia in cooperation with UN Food and Agriculture Organization organized donor workshop on “Strengthening Phytosanitary Capacity” in the framework of the phytosanitary capacity development strategy. The main aim of the workshop was to improve understanding of the need for role recognition and collaboration among public, private and regulatory institutions in order to ensure a robust and functional national plant protection organization.

 The event was attended by A. Bakhchagulyan, head of State Service for Food Safety, A. Nikoyan, head of Phytosanitary Inspectorate of State Service for Food Safety, N. Sherokilava, International Consultant on phytosanitary and other stakeholders.

UN Food and Agriculture Organization was presented by Gayane Nasoyan, Assistant FAO Representative in Armenia and Orlando Sosa, Agricultural Officer.

Abram Bakhchagulyan, head of State Service for Food Safety, in his opening speech expressed hope that the seminar will encourage consensus from the major stakeholders on phytosanitary development and plant health security over the next few years.

International consultants presented the results of the phytosanitary capacity evaluation conducted in 2012 and as a key output the rough draft summary of the national phytosanitary capacity development strategy prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture with support of FAO and the International Plant Protection Convention.

Phytosanitary international framework, national obligations and related challenges, institutional framework of national phytosanitary, evaluation and development of pthytosanitary capacity were discussed during the workshop.   

Finally, the expected further steps were presented.
