Mid-term workshop of Technical Cooperation Project “Development of open air food retail markets in Armenia” was organized by the RA Ministry of Agriculture and the UN FAO.

Mid-term workshop of Technical Cooperation Project “Development of open air food retail markets in Armenia” was organized by the RA Ministry of Agriculture and the UN FAO. The main objective of the workshop was  to present and discuss the status, findings, recommendations and plan of implementation of activities.

The workshop was opened by Mr. Robert Makaryan, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Agriculture, National Project Coordinator, and Ms. Gayane Nasoyan, Assistant FAO Representative in Armenia.

The workshop was attended by 30 participants coming from different stakeholder groups involved in agricultural development. Technical support to the workshop was provided by a team of FAO lead international and national experts, and in partnership with national agribusiness development research institutions.

The Government of Armenia is implementing measures to remove inefficiencies of marketing system caused by inappropriate institutional arrangements and the lack of capacity in design and management of open air farm retail markets. The main objective is to improve equitable access to the market by small farmers and quality of food supply at competitive prices to urban consumers.

As a part of those activities Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations is on the request of Government implementing Technical Assistance project “Development of open air food retail markets in Armenia”.

The objective of the project is to help in creating enabling environment for efficient functioning of the farm produce marketing system and equitable farmers’ access to retail markets. In particular, the project will support establishment of the pilot farmers’ market operating in line with contemporary rules and practices used in that kind of markets. The project will also develop capacities of supporting institutions to provide relevant services and information for farmers’ participation in farmers’ markets.
